Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Legnacreeve

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts and ringforts are the same kind of place: old earthen rings that people shaped, defended, lived around or stopped using. The fort in Legnacreeve is recorded on the 1834 map as a subcircular enclosure about 35m by 30m, but no ridge or ditch is visible now in the pasture. It may have been a homestead, a boundary marker, a seasonal camp or a abandoned yard whose earth was levelled by fields and forgetting.
Located on a rise towards the bottom of a S-facing slope and c. 60m N of a small canalised W-E stream. A subcircular enclosure (dims c. 35m E-W; c. 30m N-S) is depicted only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in improved pasture The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 26 February 2018
