Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Larganboy East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Larganboy East held a forty-metre rath on a natural rise, visible only through stunted grass until ploughing erased it entirely. The field swallowed the bank and forgot the shape, leaving behind a smooth patch of pasture where a whole life once turned.
In improved pasture, located on a natural rise. Not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; depicted on the 25-inch plan and the on the 1917 OS 6-incn as a broadly oval enclosure (40m NW−SE; 35m NE−SW). On the 25-inch plan a field boundary is shown curving around the S arc, possibly marking the outer edge of a fosse; this is not shown on the 1917 OS 6-inch map. The enclosure, which was most likely a rath, has been levelled. When inspected in 1998, a cropmark of stunted grass representing a levelled bank/scarp was visible, outlining a roughly circular area (diam. c. 40m). The interior encompasses a low, gently domed natural rise. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 24 February 2022
