Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lakyle South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human ringforts, circular earthworks where people lived, worked and were buried. The fairy name came later, a warning or a joke, keeping the dead place clear or making the living admit they did not understand it. In Lakyle South the field may have held a household, a boundary, a burial or a small defence. The earth remembers the shape even when the name has changed.
