What is recorded here

Lackeen preserves a true ringfort beside the Awbeg River, not a fantasy circle. Its earth works remain visible beside modern pasture, marking an old defended place rather than a fairy tale. The fort stands as a recorded archaeological site in County Cork, with a broken southern bank and a causeway across its outer ditch.

In pasture, on NW-facing slope c. 40m E of Awbeg River. Circular slightly raised area (30.3m NW-SE; 28.3m NE-SW) enclosed by fosse (D 0.5m); outer bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.45m; Wth 5.4m) with external fosse (D 0.9m). Drain with field boundary outside truncates fosses and bank to NW. Break (Wth 1.6m) in bank to S, with causeway across outer fosse.
