Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockreagh (magunihy By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible fort remains at Knockreagh, only a faint circular shadow on the old survey and a lane that still skirts the hidden ground. The story tells of a woman who walked through the hill, reappeared behind her husband, and vanished with half the village children. The land kept her mystery intact, denying entry even to the men who measured it. What was built there may have been a threshold rather than a house, a place where the ordinary world thinned instead of a wall that closed it off.
In forestry, on the break of a SW-facing slope. Access to this rath was not gained. It is indicated on the 1895 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) skirted by a lane WSW-NNE. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
