Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knocknakilla

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knocknakilla held a double-fenced fort on John Harrington's land until his father removed it about 1875. The 1842 map still shows a thirty-metre circular enclosure on the west-facing slope, but a field fence now cuts through the place where the fort stood. Any underground passage mentioned in the inventory remains unproven, leaving the site as a forgotten shape rather than a visible ruin.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace; field fence runs N-S through site. Possible Man-made underground passage (9067) in interior. According to Broker (1937, 46) fort with 'double fence' on John Harrington's land 'removed by owner's father about 1875'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
