Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knocknakilla

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knocknakilla holds a worn earthen ring, fifty metres across, where stone facing still reinforces the bank against the slope. The fort overlookes a stream valley, pairing human defence with older standing stones nearby. Conifers now cluster inside the circle, marking how quickly living things reclaim forgotten shape.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope, overlooking stream valley to W and NW. Circular area (52m E-W; 50m N-S) defined by earthen bank (H 1.2m). Bank heavily eroded; reinforced externally with stone facing. Interior raised on NW side to compensate for hillslope; E half overgrown with bushes; group of coniferous trees planted in NW quadrant, near centre. To SSE, c. 60m away, is pair of standing stones (6557). May be fort mentioned by Broker(1937, 46) on Dan Dennehy's land as '1/2 acre, bank lined with stones'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
