Fitzgerald recorded a chambered ringfort in Knocknacally before the land claimed back the exact spot. The fort likely stood as a defended home or boundary marker, its chambers giving up residence, storage, or ritual use under ordinary Cork skies. Men may have built it, lived inside it, and vanished into the wider world while the earth kept the shape behind them.

According to Fitzgerald (1858, 23) there was a ringfort 'with chambers' (CO067-056---) in this townland. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994).
