Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockmartin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockmartin held a true ringfort before human arrogance erased it. The site featured a raised subcircular area enclosed by a bank of earth and stone with an external fosse, yet the original entrance resisted recognition even when the structure remained whole. People called it a fairy fort because the shape defied ordinary human purpose. The fort has since been destroyed and is no longer visible at ground level, leaving behind a vacant memory rather than a ruin.
On a low rise in pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised subcircular area (38m NE-SW; 33m NW-SE) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone with an external fosse. The original entrance was not recognisable. It has since been destroyed and is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
