What is recorded here

Knockbrack East held a circular earthen fort where people buried dead animals inside a collapsed underground passage shaped like the letter L. The fort disappeared under a flat field, but that forgetting is not the same as loss because the land still carries the shape of what it swallowed.

This circular enclosure is situated SW of KE021-103----. It is marked on the 1841-42 and 1898 OS maps and shows up on the Geological Survey of Ireland's aerial photographs (1977). According to the Kerry Field Notes (1945) the Club discovered a Man-made underground passage in the shape of the letter 'L' in the centre of the fort. The Man-made underground passage (KE021-104001-) was much collapsed and filled, being used as a burial place for animals. However, all that survives today is an undulating field which may signify the position of the original fort. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockbrack East is a circular early-medieval defensive or domestic enclosure, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, and the Kerry Field Notes suggest possible links to prehistoric or early Christian habitation.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
