Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockbrack East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockbrack East once held a circular fort large enough to mark on maps and photographs before men levelled it into ordinary ground. The earth forgot the shape, but the region remembers the loss because an intact ring would still stand where soil was taken.
Marked as a circular enclosure on both the 1841-42 and 1898 OS maps, this site also shows up quite clearly on the Geological Survey of Ireland's aerial photographs. However, this site has been levelled and no surface trace survives. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 755. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
