Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockbarry (orrery and Kilmore By., Buttevant Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockbarry holds a forgotten ring where human hands shaped the earth before memory faded. The bank still curves through the field, marking a boundary drawn in soil rather than stone. People may have lived there, loved there, or fled from it, but the land kept the shape of their choice.
Cropmark, visible in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R527), shows bank, with external fosse S ->NW, truncated by field fence (E-W) on N side. Faint trace of circular enclosure visible, as cropmark of bank, in aerial photograph (ibid.) immediately to E. Ringfort (CO016-22702-) c. 70m to SSE in same field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
