What is recorded here
Knockballyfookeen holds a thirty-metre earthen ring where wet pasture and dense vegetation still mark the old boundary. The bank rises slightly outside the ditch, while the inside slopes gently toward a hidden central space. That inversion suggests the fort was built to be seen from beyond rather than defended from within. People may have gathered there to watch the horizon, perform seasonal rites or mark territory before roads and fields replaced the older landscape. The earth remembers the shape even when the name has faded into local speech.
In rough and wet, level pasture. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by a low earthen bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.25m; Wth 5.4m) visible from W-N-NE, reduced to a scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 0.8m) elsewhere, fosse (Wth 5.9m; D 0.45m) best preserved from WNW-N-NE and SSW-SW with possible remains of an external bank visible from NNE-ENE. The fosse is obscured by dense overgrowth from S-SSW and is waterlogged from SSW-SW. Interior very overgrown with vegetation. According to local information, this is known as the ‘fort field’. Monument is visible as a tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018.
