Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockane (carbery West (e.d) By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockane holds a thirty-metre circular fort where earthen banks and a stone fence enclose a chamber that may contain a hidden underground passage. The southeast entrance remains narrow enough to force every visitor into a singular file, creating a bottleneck where human traffic still answers the ancient design. What lives beneath the soil is no longer certain, but the shape preserves the memory of a place built to control access rather than resist assault.
Roughly circular area (diam. 30m) enclosed by scarp (H 1.8m) NW->E; earthen bank (H 1.6m) E->S; stone field fence replaces bank to W. Gap in bank to S; entrance to SE (Wth 1.2m). Possible Man-made underground passage (CO119-096---) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
