Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockakishta

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockakishta holds a thirty-eight-metre earthen ring where a forgotten entrance has vanished beneath soil and time. The bank still rises above a modern trench and spring well, marking a boundary drawn long before human memory. There is no gate to force, no owner to bargain with, and no shape to identify. It is a complete circle of excluded life, waiting for someone reckless enough to walk through the wall itself.
Raised circular area (int. dims. 38m E-W; 35.5m N-S) enclosed by an earthen bank outside of which is a modern drainage trench and a spring well. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
