Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kiltoghert

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entrance, two rath neighbours within thirty metres, and a rush band marking the lost ditch: Kiltoghert keeps its shape on a drumlin slope while hiding the door where people entered. The earth bank still stands half a metre high, wide enough to touch along most of its length, suggesting a small defended or ceremonial place rather than a abandoned mound. Its certainty is in the shape and company, not in a named owner or dated event.
Situated towards the top of the SE-facing slope of a NNE-SSW drumlin ridge. This is a grass and rush-covered oval area (int. dims 30.5m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-3.5m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.35m) SW-N which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.8-1.2m) elsewhere, and a fosse represented by an external band of rushes (Wth 2m) at NW. The original entrance is not identified. Rath (LE027-116----) is c. 35m to the N and rath (LE027-118----) is c. 30m to the W. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
