Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kiltoghert

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-two metres across on a drumlin ridge in Kiltoghert, the fort keeps its shape beneath grass and rushes. Its earthen banks still rise above a narrow fosse, and a two-metre causeway cuts through at the north-east. Two other raths sit within a hundred metres, suggesting a small cluster of dwellings rather than a lonely marker. People may have lived, herded or hidden there before the land forgot their names.
Located on top of a NNE-SSW drumlin ridge. This is a grass and rush-covered circular area (int. diam. 32m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at N: Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.2m; max. ext. H 1.55m) which is separated by a fosse (at N: Wth of base 1.65m) from an outer bank (at N: Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.95m; ext. H 0.35m). There is an entrance and causeway (Wth 2m) at NNE. Rath (LE027-116----) is c. 60m to the NNE and rath (LE027-117----) is c. 30m to the E. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
