Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed by folklore. Kilquane held a true circular defence about thirty metres wide on a gentle north-facing slope, large enough to exclude every small creature story people later invented. Ploughmen and developers erased much of the bank and ditch, yet the ground still carries a faint circular memory beneath pasture. The fairies never lived there; people did, built a boundary, then disappeared into the ordinary forgetting that erases most Irish architecture.
