Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilpatrick (muskerry West By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No. Of record: 9057. A circular earthwork in Kilpatrick, County Cork, has given up much of its shape to cattle and time. What remains is a broken ring on a farm slope, with two possible underground passages still hidden inside. The fort is no longer a fort in the way people first built it, but it is still a place where human hands shaped the land and the land took it back.
In pasture, on SSE-facing slope. Circular area (31m E-W; 30m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2.4m), stone-faced in parts. Entrance (Wth 4m) to E. Bank and interior severely eroded by cattle, due to close proximity to farmyard. Two possible Man-made underground passages (9058; 9059) in interior. No visible surface trace of external fosse depicted to W on 1940 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
