Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilnaslieve

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilnaslieve is a worn earthen ring on the south slope of Cat Hill in County Galway, where a road now cuts through its northern edge. The surviving scarp marks a shallow circle about twenty-nine metres across, small enough for a family farm but large enough to exclude strangers. People may have lived there before the land changed, raising children, storing grain, and watching the valley through gaps in the hedge or turf wall. What remains is a bruise in the grass, yet the shape still resists forgetting.
On S-facing slopes of Cat Hill in grassland. Very poorly preserved subcircular rath (D 29.2m) defined by a scarp which survives from NE through S to NW. A road cuts the monument at N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
