Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilnadur

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilnadur is a circular earthen ringfort, not a fairy fort. It stands on a SW-facing slope in County Cork, Ireland. The bank rises 1.1m and encloses a 25m diameter area. Gaps appear at the north and south. The interior cuts into the hillside on the north side. The south side rises to compensate for the slope. A shallow external fosse marks the SE edge. A field fence runs along the NW. The structure remains visible in pasture today.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 25m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.1m) N->S; scarp to SW; field fence to NW; shallow external fosse to SE. Gap in bank to N and S. Interior cuts into hillside to N; raised on S side to compensate for hillslope. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
