Fairy forts are not a separate kind of monument. They are ordinary ringforts, field boundaries, burial mounds or abandoned houses that people stopped using and then explained with fantasy. In Killeens the earthworks may have been a farm, a boundary or a small defence before they became a warning about hidden life. The fairy label does not complete the meaning, it admits the human meaning has been forgotten.
