Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Killahan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Killahan held a large circular fort beside the Tonaknock stone cross, visible on the 1841-42 map but erased from the 1916 edition and lost entirely today. The boundary vanished, perhaps through soil, forgetting or deliberate erasure, yet the fort’s shape still provokes because it resisted ordinary visibility.
This large circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 OS map and is situated WNW of Tonaknock stone cross (878). It does not appear on the 1916 edition map and no trace survives today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 576. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
