Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Killabraher North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Killabraher North holds a vanished ringfort, large enough to circle twice before returning to the starting point. Farms and ploughs have eaten most of it, leaving only a low earthen arc and a faint scarp to mark where the boundary once stood. What remains is not a display but a receipt: the ground still remembers the shape even when the field has stopped repeating it.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 65m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, skirted by field boundary E->NW; only field boundary remains on 1905 OS 6-inch map; field boundary similar on 1936 OS 6-inch map with hachured scarp NW->E, completing circle. Levelled; arc formed by earthen field boundary survives S->NW; remains of enclosure survives to N as low scarp. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
