What is recorded here
Killabraher holds a ghost church: a rectangular shadow in the graveyard, marked only by a vault and the absence of headstones. Maps drew walls in 1842, but people stopped naming the building by 1905. What is left is a room without a roof, waiting to be remembered by the dead around it.
North-of-centre in graveyard (14590). Roughly rectangular area (c. 10m E-W; c. 6.5m N-S), free of upright headstones and defined by burial vault to E, indicates site of church. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular structure (c. 18m E-W; c. 7m N-S) marked 'in ruins'; marked 'site of' on 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. No churches in use in Shandrum parish, in which Killabraher lies, in 1673 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 377). Described by Smith (1750, vol. 1, 318) as 'a ruined monastery, but of what order is uncertain...'; by Guy's Topographical Dictionary of 1887 as 'a Franciscan monastery' (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 4, 204); Gwynn and Hadcock (1988, 278, 366) however find 'no evidence that this was Franciscan' and state that 'order and period unknown'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
