Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilgarriff

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilgarriff holds a broken fairy fort where a shallow earthen bank still circles a bare grass disk. The ring faces the southwest, and its thin wall may have guided a household, a herdsman or a child away from the field’s edge. Men call it a fortress because size and shape suggest defense, yet the ground offers no gate, hall or hearth. It remains a border drawn in soil, waiting for the life that formed it to return.
In tillage, on SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 27m NNE-SSW) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1m), stone faced in parts. Entrance (Wth 2.8m) to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
