Marianne and Denis watched the red wheel spin through the gap, pulling the cart and the child behind it like a tethered dog. The woman in the green cloak stood beside the wheel, not behind the handle, and the road appeared in the dirt only after she stepped across it. Denis grabbed Marianne’s wrist, but she was already running toward the cart. The wheel vanished, the road vanished, and the child sat in the pasture holding a copper coin warm from someone else’s pocket.
