Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcullen North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a century of grass and rain built the fort, then a tractor erased it in an afternoon. The fence still kinks where the ring stood, a small admission that the ground remembered more than the person driving the machine.
In rough grazing land. Hachured as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842, 1904 and 1940 OS 6-inch maps. Hartnett (1939, 189) described ringfort as heavily overgrown (diam. 68ft) with a drain cut through it. According to local information levelled c. 1978; kink in field fence to W indicates former existence of site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
