Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcreevanty

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcreevanty holds a subcircular rath near a ridge summit, flanked by bogland and the River Clare. Its low bank and external fosse remain visible, while a scarp encloses most of the circle and a modern causeway at the southeast may mark the original entrance. The fort stands at the edge of open water and wet earth, where human hands shaped a small defensible place in a hostile landscape.
Close to the summit of a ridgeflanked by an extensive tract of bogland and the RiverClare to the S. Subcircular rath (N-S 38.7m, E-W36m), in fair condition, defined by a low bank andexternal fosse. A scarp forms the enclosing elementfrom NW through N to ENE. A causeway at SE, though modern, could have given original access. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
