Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcoorha

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcoorha holds a faded oval rath, thirty-four metres across, where a low earthen bank and shallow ditch still mark the boundary of an ordinary home. Cows may have grazed the level grass interior for centuries, trusting the field line rather than the history buried beneath their hooves. The fort lost its sharp edges long ago, yet it preserved the shape of human occupation in pasture land that forgot the names of its residents.
In level pasture. Oval area (34m E-W; 30m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.35m) with external fosse (D 0.2m; Wth 0.6m). Field boundary runs immediately outside fosse SSE->NNW. Interior level and under grass. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
