Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcooly South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcooly South once held a circular earthen fort, visible on maps from 1841 until the western wall vanished by 1916. The site has since been levelled, erasing the ridge where people likely lived, loved and argued under open sky. Forgetting is not the same as never existing.
This circular enclosure lay SE of KE015-095---- and is marked on the 1841-42 and 1916 OS maps, though on the later edition the W section is gone. This site has however been levelled. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 575. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
