Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcooly North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcooly North held a circular earthen fort that men farmed around before ploughs erased it. The disappeared ring still shadows the soil in aerial photographs, proving that erasure is never total.
This circular enclosure appears on the 1841-42 and 1916 OS maps. It also shows up as a crop mark on the Geological Survey of Ireland aerial photographs (1974). It has been levelled and no surface trace survives. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 571. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
