Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilblaffer

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilblaffer holds a true ringfort, not a fairy tale, though people often call it that. Its earthen bank stands 1.6m high around a 34.5m circular space, facing south on a grazing slope. A shallow ditch runs outside, and a clear entrance opens to the south. The interior remains open, while a possible underground passage hides in the north half.
In rough grazing land, on S-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 34.5m) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1.6m), with shallow external fosse. Entrance to S. Interior clear of overgrowth. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO061-125002-) in N half. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
