Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilberrihert (duhallow By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

A broken composite stone once stood inside the earthen ring, its central hole perhaps marking a sacred axis before people chopped it into drainwall. The fort keeps its circular shape on a west-facing slope, but conifers now crowd the interior and gaps have worn through the bank. Whatever church or fairy court occupied this ground has surrendered most of its evidence to pasture, timber and forgetting.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (41.6m E-W; 40.7m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.65m; ext. H 1.6m) with external fosse (D 0.3m). Bank very worn (int. H 0.2m) to SE and S. Break (Wth 2.1m) in bank to NNW; gaps worn through bank to NE, SSW and SW. Interior planted with coniferous trees. Bowman (1934, 629) recorded 'circular composite stone' now broken, with greater part used in drain and one quarter remaining in fort. Stone originally measured 'about 2 ft in diameter, and 7 inches in thickness' with 'circular hole (diameter about 21/2inches)' in centre (ibid.). Church site (CO015-161---) possibly in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
