Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Keeloge

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Keeloge holds a faded ringfort where grass and rushes hide a circular platform twenty-six metres across. The earth rises barely eighty centimetres at its northern edge, marking a boundary now reduced to a shallow ditch and forgotten purpose. People may have lived there before the land swallowed their walls, but the entrance has vanished and the fortress has become a gentle bump between drumlins.
Situated in a low-lying landscape between drumlins. This is a grass and rush-covered circular platform (diam. 26m N-S; 25m E-W; H 0.4m at E to 0.8m at N) defined by slight traces of a fosse (Wth of base 0.65m). The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 23 September 2008 Amended: 5 December 2019
