Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Joycegrove

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible surface trace survives, yet a map drawn before the land changed recorded a circular enclosure forty metres wide on a rise in open pastureland. That absence is not nothing. It is a ring of forgotten pressure, likely human-made and now erased by plough, boot, or time. The fort disappeared the way most small truths do: gradually, without witness, while the field kept using its shape for grass and light.
On a rise in open pastureland, formerly demesne land. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 40m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
