Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Islandav

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Islandav holds a circular earthen ringfort where a hidden passage may still cut through the floor. The bank rises one metre twenty outside and drops to sixty centimetres inside, while a narrow north-west gap admits a person or a small cart. That difference suggests the fort was built for living, not for display. A person could have walked the interior at dusk, listened for water in the passage, and judged the depth of the hole by the sound returned. The fairies may have taken the place later, but the shape still answers the needs of a human body.
In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope. Circular slightly raised area (34m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.2m) SE->NE; external fosse (D 1.05m) to SW, shallow depression (D 0.2m) outside bank elsewhere. Entrance (Wth 2.5m) to NW. Bank heavily overgrown; material dumped on inner face of bank to NE where limekiln depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO022-262---) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
