Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Isertkelly North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Isertkelly North holds a worn circular rath, roughly twenty-five metres across, where a low earthen bank still traces the shape of a forgotten home. Cattle graze above the buried passage and field walls cut through the remains, proving that human hands have repeatedly rearranged the place. The fort is no longer a fort in the proud sense, but it is still a marker of residence, exclusion and memory on a NW-facing slope.
On a NW-facing slope in pastureland. This poorly preserved circular rath (diam. c. 25m) is defined by a low wide earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.6m). A field wall cuts through it at NW and SE and no visible surface trace of the enclosing element survives to the E of it due to land-improvement works. A possible Man-made underground passage (GA114-095001-) is associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 5 January 2018
