What is recorded here
Inch West holds a circular earthen fort two fields above the River Galey, its broad bank rising nearly two metres around a damp interior divided by a later fieldbank. The shallow rectangular pit in the southwest sector remains unexplained, perhaps a discarded hole, a lost socket or a child's clumsy dig. Whatever it marked, the fort still keeps its shape in poor drainage, enduring long after the hands that built it forgot the name of the place.
Internal diameter 29m N-S, 27m E-W
Situated two fields N of the River Galey in poorly drained land, this univallate rath consists of a circular area enclosed by a well-defined bank and exterior fosse. The enclosing bank is c 4m wide and rises to 1.8m high externally and c 1m above the interior. The external fosse encloses most of the site, except to the SW where a fieldbank and ditch cut through it, though it does not affect the bank. The fosse is shallow and varies from 1m-c 3m in width and is .4m deep. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land and is divided into two unequal parts by a fieldbank running NW-SE and leaving the fort at the S sector, where it cuts through the bank and exterior fosse. In the SW sector of the interior is a shallow rectangular pit, 2.4m x 2.8m x .3m deep.
