Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Hurlstone

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible mound remains on the Hurlstone ridge, but a circular shadow still marks the ground beneath the grass. The lost fort is recorded only in aerial images and old survey notes, yet its shape is easy to picture: a round enclosure cut into the slope, with a narrow inner ditch and an open interior later quarried for stone. The fairy fort name suggests people once believed the circle belonged to someone else. In that belief, the absence of a mound does not empty the place; it withholds the story instead of finishing it.
Located towards the bottom of the SW-facing slope of the NE-SW Hurlstone ridge. An aerial photograph (GB91.ED.11) from July 1991 shows the cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 55m) defined by a fosse, with faint traces of an incomplete, narrow inner fosse. Much of the interior appears to have been quarried. It is also visible on OSI images (1995) and more faintly on Google Earth 29/06/2021), as noted by Frank Prendergast. See the attached image from OSI (1995) Compiled by: Dr Gillian Barrett for the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Date of upload: 23 December 2010 Amended: 9 March 2023
