What is recorded here
Thirty-three metres across on a gentle Kerry slope, the earthen bank still stands with a four-metre gap in the north-east, overlooking pasture in every direction. Two oblong depressions mark the north and east sides of the rim, as if large vessels or wooden beams once lay there before rot and soil erased them. A person could have lived inside the slight rise, watched weather come off the sea, and kept goats or children safe when storms closed the valley. The fairies belong in the name only; the shape and size point to a human homestead, ordinary in purpose and remarkable in survival.
Internal diameter 33.4m N-S, 31m E-W
Situated on gently sloping pastureland, the view from this site is excellent in all directions. This univallate rath consists of a sub-circular area enclosed by an earthen bank. The bank contains two oblong depressions, one to the N measuring 9m x 2m and one to the E measuring 8m x 2m. The external height of the bank on average measures 1.2m and the internal height .8m. A 4m wide gap in the NE provides access to the interior. An exterior fosse is to be noted from the W through S to E; it measures 2.6m wide and .8m below the height of the surrounding land. The interior is at a slightly higher level than the surrounding land and in the NW sector there is a small depression measuring 1m x 4.6m.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 167. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
