Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gullane East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-seven metres of forgotten boundary still circles Gullane East, marking a place where human life may have turned before roads or kingdoms existed. The northern edge has blended into an ordinary fieldbank, hiding the fort inside farmland rather than displaying it as a monument. That erosion suggests the rath stopped being special long before it stopped being real.
Internal diameter 37m N-S, 30m E-W This univallate rath is situated NE of a standing stone (KE001-022----). The N sector of the enclosing earthen bank has been incorporated into a fieldbank running NW-SE in direction. The enclosing bank is low and wide and has a maximum height of 1.6m externally, .8m internally and varies in width from 3m-7m. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 133. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
