What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Grange Irish, County Louth, is a worn oval ring of earth and stone, broad enough to walk beside but low enough to overlook. Its degraded bank still encloses a wide space, while a narrow gap at the northeast edge suggests an entrance rather than a break. People may have lived, herded or hidden there before the land forgot the purpose of the ridge. The shape remains clear even when the story fades.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Oval area (int. dims. 37.5m NW-SE, 23.5m NE-SW) enclosed by much-degraded earth and stone bank (Wth 5.8m, H 1.3m). No visible trace of fosse. Possible ancient entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) at NE.
