Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gowel

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No amount of grief or gold can buy back what has gone. The living room holds only shadow now. Better to leave the dead behind and go hunting than sit inside the loss like a prisoner.
Situated on the N-facing slope of a small drumlin rise. This is a grass and rush-covered oval area (int. dims 28m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.3m at N to 7m at S; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.3m) which is overlain by a field bank SW-NW, and slight traces of an external fosse (Wth 3m) N-NE. An original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
