Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible fort remains at Gortroe. The missing earth and displaced stone likely built a local structure or road, leaving behind only a level pasture and a changed land boundary.
In pasture, broken by rock outcrop, on SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 27m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.65m) W->SSE, stone wall atop bank SSW->NNW. Second earthen bank (H 2.1m) SSE->W. Entrance (Wth 3m) through both banks to SSW; cattle gap to N. Cultivation ridges cross interior on N-S axis. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
