Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortnalicky (muskerry West By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Muskerry West By. contains a vanished fairy fort, marked only on old maps as a thirty-five-metre circular enclosure on a southwest-facing slope. It likely held people, excluded others, and participated in the ordinary rhythms of Mid Cork before pasture and ploughing removed its edge. The absence does not diminish the place; it redirects attention to the lives that shaped the land and disappeared beneath it.
Shown on 1842, 1903 and 1940 OS 6-inch maps as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m). In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
