Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortmore

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons has stood in Gortmore since before human memory, its circular walls still holding the shape of forgotten lives. The fairies never left, only stopped being visible, and the earth forgot which parts belonged to people. What looks like ruin is a room where visibility ended, not occupancy.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 28.3m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and an infilled fosse, the outline of which is still identifiable. Break in bank at W represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
