Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gorteen East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Gorteen East held a forty-metre earthen ring on a hillock, but human hands or time erased it before modern cameras arrived. The 1841 map still draws its circular line, while the 1923 map keeps only a fragment of eastern bank. The pasture now offers no ridge, no ditch, no shadow of the fort. What remained was a drawing, not a place, and the drawing has vanished too.
In pasture, atop hillock. Monument, depicted on 1841 OS 6-inch map as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m), has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Only short section of enclosing element (E->SW) shown on 1923 OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
