Mortons and fairies both wanted Gorteen, but neither understands the other. Measure the circle, mark the bank, and leave the middle unexplained.
Situated on S facing slope of rising ground in upland area. Raised circular area (diam 26.5m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1m; ext. H 1m) reduced in places to a scarp, fosse (Wth 1.5m; ext. D 0.3m) with possible outer bank (Wth 1m; ext. H 0.4m) visible from N to E only. Field fence intersects site at S with forest plantation surrounding site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
