Fairy forts are human places misnamed, often old farmsteads or shelters. In Gormona, a circular bank and a larger D-shaped annex still mark the ground beneath scrub and fallen stone. People lived there, built there, and disappeared from the story while the earth kept the shape.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1938-9 'OS 6-inch' map as approximately circular enclosure (max. diam. c. 40m) with D-shaped annexe attached at NW (max. diam. c. 50m). Both features shown as enclosed by bank. Site partly covered with field clearance boulders and dense scrub so that outline of site cannot be distinguished.

A fairy fort, or earthen ringfort, in Gormona is a small, circular earthwork enclosure typical of early-medieval Ireland, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. Local tradition associates such sites with the faé or other supernatural beings, and they were often avoided or revered in folklore.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
